Beauty care in pregnancy
Caring beauty during pregnancy is good for the body and mind, but care is needed to choose cosmetics at that stage. According to Mauricio Pupo, pharmacist, specialist teacher and graduate in Cosmetology, "some products can trigger allergies and rashes, but others cross the placenta and can even be found in breast milk." Department Coordinator of the Brazilian Society of Cosmetic Dermatology Dermatology, Rio de Janeiro, the dermatologist Monica Azulay remember that the professionals in the field of aesthetics and beauty are at more risk because they are constantly exposed to the product. "A pregnant woman can dye your hair, since it paints temporary use - shampoos tint - and do not use the product frequently. Hairdressers and especialists, dealing with different types of paint, every day should wear gloves and masks, preferably in an airy atmosphere, "explains the doctor.
The following experts take questions asked about the use of substances in beauty products during pregnancy:
1 Ammonia
A dermatologist Monica Azulay explains the difference between the products, "The semi-permanent and permanent dyes cover gray hair and last 4 to 6 weeks. These products contain ammonia and should not be used during pregnancy. Temporary dyes which do not penetrate the hair cuticle can be used by pregnant women. The big problem is that professional salons usually mix 2 or 3 colors to achieve the desired shade. For the safety of the mother and baby, you need to make sure the products that are being applied. " A dermatologist remember that henna available in the market is rarely pure. "It is usually associated with metal salts, which can cause problems for the newborn," advises Monica.
2 Mineral oil
Present in most products thanks to its emollient action, mineral oil (a derivative of petroleum) was associated in different studies with increased mortality by different types of cancer, such as lymphoma and leukemia. "There are studies published in prestigious scientific journals such as American Journal of Industrial Medicine and Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology. The label is possible to identify the presence of mineral oil through the terms of paraffin oil and mineral oil ", explains the expert in cosmetology Mauricio Pupo.
3 Urea
A major component of moisturizers, urea penetrates the skin and can cross the placenta, reaching the fetus. "There are no studies explaining the consequences for the baby," says the pharmacist, specialist in cosmetology, Mauricio Pupo. "The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) has determined that products in dosages higher than 3% of urea on the label must contain a warning not to be used during pregnancy. The court also banned the manufacture of cosmetics with urea concentration greater than 10%, "explains professional.
4 UV Filter
According to a study conducted by the University of Zurich in Switzerland, some sunscreens may reach the milk. "The results indicate the presence of UV filters in 85% of breast milk samples tested. How substances can be toxic to the baby, recommend using 100% physical sunscreen minerals during pregnancy, which ensures safety, since it is not absorbed by the skin, "says Mauricio Pupo. The filters to which it refers are made exclusively with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, folder type water.
5 Guanidine
Monica Azulay explains that products for straightening hair usually contain ammonium thioglycolate and guanidine, substances still need further studies to determine potential effects on the mother or the baby. "The guanidine thioglycolate and weaken the hair fiber and hair can irritate the skin, but we have no evidence of fetal malformation. As the effects are little known, recommend that pregnant women do not use these products during the first trimester of pregnancy, "advises dermatologist.
